Nowadays seemingly all disciplines disciplines of science have their nano-branch although the buzzword "nano" doesn´t mean anythingmore than length scales between 1 and 100 nm. So why are nanoscale systems so interesting? One first reason is, that with smaller particle radii the ratio of surface to volume largely increases. Particle surfaces inhibit a large free energy, because the translational symmetry of the solid body is broken and surface atoms and molecules are in non-saturated bond situations. Therefore surface-rich materials exhibit  dramtically different properties as the bulk materials. This finding is of great importance for the application of materials in heterogeneous catalysis. Additionally, conducting and semi-conducting nano-particles often have vastly different optical and electrical properties than the bulk materials due to quantum-size effects.
